So, you’ve decided to strip your room of its old-looking
wallpaper and you’re either going to hang some fresh and new wallpaper, or
you’re going to re-paint the room. Either way, you must remove your wallpaper first!

strip wallpaper using three different methods!
However, before you even begin to strip your wallpaper, you
must firstly prepare your room for wallpaper stripping in order to not only
reduce the amount of dirt and other build-ups of excess rubbish, but also to
save your furniture, or other object in your room too.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to effectively prepare
your room for wallpaper stripping:
1.)
Clear the
room
Firstly, you must clear the room as much as you possibly can
in order to have a larger space in which you can start to strip your wallpaper
from. This means that smaller objects, such as ornaments, lamps, pillows,
cushions and other easily moved items should be removed from the room.
However, any larger items- such as sofas,
tables, or any other pieces of furniture- must be moved into the centre of the
room, taking up as little space as possible. These items should most definitely
be covered up with either cloth dustsheets or polythene dustsheets in order to
protect the pieces underneath.

2.)
Remove anything on the walls
A bit like the step above, you must
remove anything from the walls, for instance picture frames, screws, nails etc.
However, you must also ensure that you remove the vents too.
After the vents
have been removed, they must be covered up too. This can be done by either
chopping up one of your polythene dust sheets- one of the sheets which you have
used to cover up your furniture in the step above- or by using a plastic bag.
Whichever one of the above methods you
choose, you must ensure that you use masking tape- or any other tape, although
masking tape is ideal- to seal off any of the openings which you have removed
the vents from.

3.)
Turn off the electricity
This is an essential step which must not
be overlooked for health and safety purposes. You must ensure that you switch
off the electricity in the room in which you intend to remove your wallpaper,
just in case your chemical wallpaper stripping solution, or any steam and/or
water from your electric steam wallpaper stripper gets into either the
electrical sockets, or even the switches too.
Depending on the types of light switches
that you own, you may need to loosen, or even completely remove the faceplates
from the wall in order to remove any wallpaper which may be stuck behind them.
These faceplates can be removed either via
unscrewing them, or they might even just clip off, however this is very
dependent on which types of faceplates your home has.

4.)
Test that your electricity is turned off
If you have any doubt about the above
step, please contact a qualified electrician in order to ensure that the
process is completed correctly.
However, if you are confident with the
above step, all you have to do to test that the correct circuit has been isolated
and dead is to use a socket tester to confirm that the power is off via the
main power circuit. On the lightning circuit, you must use either a voltage meter
or a voltage tester to confirm that the power is completely switched off.

5.)
Protect the sockets and/or switched from any drips or debris
This step can be complete led by either using
a polythene dust sheet, or a plastic bag of some sort. If you cut the sheet or
bag into the correct size to completely cover your sockets and/or switches, you
can then take masking tape and stick the edges of the plastic sheeting or bag
to the wall.
You can use masking tape for this step,
however any other kind of tape can be used, however masking tape is the best as
it does not cause as much damage as other tapes such as duct tape.

6.)
Protect your floors and/or furniture from any drips or debris
Much like the point above, you must
ensure that everything is protected against the inevitable debris and drips
that will occur as you strip your wallpaper.
If your furniture and other objects have
already been cleared from the room- or are placed in the middle of the room-
ensure that you cover them with either a polythene of a cloth dust sheet. It is
recommended that you cover with a cloth sheet first, and then overlay it with a
polythene dust sheet as polythene can protect against moisture, whereas cloth
cannot.

7.)
Score your walls
You must make sure that you score your
walls before attempting to use the chemical stripping solution, natural stripping
solution, or even the electrical steam stripping tool in order to help
whichever method to penetrate the wallpaper.
By completing this final step, the
solution and/or steam can help loosen the adhesive, which makes removing the
wallpaper a lot easier than before. Additionally, some types of wallpaper-
especially painted wallpaper- can repel quite a lot of water, therefore scoring
it is essential in order to aid the penetration of either the steam, or the
stripping solution.
Scoring the walls can be easily achieved
by using and orbital scorer. All that you must do is press the scorer against
the wall in order to create an even and consistent score throughout your
wallpaper. However, you must ensure that you don’t press down too hard, in
order to damage the plaster underneath. This is because you only must allow the
teeth of the orbital scorer to cut into the surface of the paper, rather than
damaging any walls.
It is essential that you purchase an
orbital scorer for this step, as using sharp objects such as a knife or
scissors, will most definitely damage the plaster underneath your wallpaper,
resulting in an uneven hanging of your new, fresh wallpaper.

8.)
Strip your wallpaper using your preferred method
