Top ways to Style Metallic Paints in the Home! | Decorating Centre Online

How can I style Metallic Paint in my Home?

Using metallics in the home has become such a popular and effective way of adding that little bit of shine and stunning vividness into your home!

Whether you want to go all out with a feature wall, something subtler or anything else, you can easily incorporate metallic paints into your home in various ways!

There are many colours of metallic paints which you can use too! This means that they can be completely integrated into you home whether you are intending to change your colour scheme or not!

What colours would be good for my colour scheme?
As there are so many different types of metallic paints available to purchase, you may be a little bit unsure on how to match them with a specific colour scheme in your home!

However, never fear, it is very simple and very effective to style your metallic paint with specific colour schemes.

But don’t use the guide below as gospel, there can be many other colour schemes which will work in a wonderful way with each of the colours below:

SILVER: One of the best colour schemes that works with a silver metallic paint would be light greys, dark greys and whites.

This colour scheme is a great way to allow the silver metallic paint to shine, as it will not only compliment the greys and whites, but it will also work to allow the shimmering surface of your metallic paint to shine.

GOLD: Gold is such a versatile metallic colour that it can work with many different types of colour scheme.

However, much like pairing silver with a grey and white colour scheme as detailed above, gold would work best with a neutral, but warm colour scheme. This will allow the gold to shine regally, bringing out the warm tones in your neutral colour scheme.

COPPER: Copper is such a bold and vibrant colour, that sometimes pairing it with a neutral or less bold colour will make the copper colour stand out far too much in your space.

This means that pairing copper with bold colours such as teal and darker greys can be a wonderful way to make a bold and eye-catching space which blends all the colours together in a harmonised way.

CHAMPAGNE GOLD: This shade of metallic gold is a subtler version of the gold colour featured above.

This means that it would work with darker shades of neutral colours much like the colour scheme for the gold metallic paint above.

This is because if a bolder colour like teal was used with this paint, the champagne gold metallic colour would blend into the background and not be the accent piece of the space.

ROSE GOLD: A rose gold metallic paint is a very popular colour for many reasons, one being that it is the perfect complimentary colour for a pink colour scheme!

As rose gold is a subtle combination of gold with a pinkish hue, this colour scheme works perfectly as long as the pink hues which you decide on compliment the pink hues of the rose gold metallic paint.

How would I style a metallic feature wall?

Metallic feature walls are a wonderful way of adding that little bit of extra shimmer and shine into your home!

Using metallic colours as a feature wall is also the perfect way to compromise between a bold and patterns wallpaper feature wall and a plain four walls of the same colour!

Metallic walls can complement the other walls and not stand out as much as they once did before- although this is very dependent on the colours which you decide to paint your metallic paints with!

One of the easiest ways to style your brand-new metallic feature wall is to incorporate the colours in different parts of the room!

This can be in the form of small metallic ornaments and other small decorative details, but it can also be in more unique ways too!

Some of these unique metallic room accessories are:

· Metallic cushions

· Metallic throws

· Metallic frames

· Metallic storage boxes

· And so many more metallic pieces which you can easily add to your space!

However, it is essential that you only incorporate small pieces of metallic colour into your space, as if you add too many into your space, it could become a space filled with metallic madness!

You can easily achieve a uniquely patterned metallic wall, door or any other surface which you want to give a beautiful metallic pattern to your space!

The easiest way to do this is by creating your patterns using specialised decorators’ tape.

If you want to follow the geometric trend, you can create geometric patterns with your decorators’ tape and just fill them in.

These patterns can be triangular, stripes, squares or even your own unique geometric pattern!

Using decorator’s tape will ensure that the paint underneath the tape will not be pulled up or cracked from the tape, as this tape is specifically designed for this purpose.

There is even a more delicate version of decorator’s tape which you can use if you are concerned that the tape may pull off the paint from the wall, or whichever surface you are painting.

TOP TIP:
Make sure that you leave your metallic paint to dry for the appropriate time before you pull the paint off in order to avoid any jagged lines and even paint splatters on your wall!

If you need more information about this, you can watch the video below:

Can I paint other patterns on my wall with metallic paint other than geometric?

Although you can definitely paint with metallic paint freehand if you’re an artistic person with the confidence to paint a larger scale mural with a variety of different colours.

However, if you feel a little less confident in your artistic abilities, you can use stencils or even paper cut-outs to make beautiful metallic patterns on your walls.

You can either buy these stencils or make them yourself!

So, what you will need to do this is:

· Metallic Paint

· Paint brush

· Stencil/ paper cut-out/ other stencilling equipment

All you need to do is prepare the wall normally in the colour you want- check out our other blog post entitled ‘How to Paint Walls’ so that you have the smoothest base for your metallic stencilling as you can.

Follow this step-by-step guide below on how to paint metallic stencils on your walls below:

Step 1: Choose your Metallic Paint Colour!

You firstly have to choose the colour of the metallic paint which you would like for your walls! There are five different colours to choose from: Rose Gold, Champagne Gold, Copper, Gold and Silver!

Make sure that you choose a colour which will work with your colour scheme as detailed above!

Step 2: Prime your Wall Accordingly!

Make sure that your wall is primed, painted and as smooth as it possibly can be for your stencil to work the best way on your wall.

The best way to do this is to sand your wall down lightly, prime with an appropriate primer and then use our colour match paint with an appropriate finish on top if that.

If you need more information regarding this, you can check out our previous Blog Posts for some handy decorating Tips & Tricks!

Step 3: Choose your Stencil!

There are many different ways of stencilling your wall with metallic paint! You can cut out your own paper stencil, buy already cut-out stencils, or even use stamp rollers to achieve this look!

These stencils are available in a wide variety of different patterns (especially if you cut them yourself!), however they are usually a repeated pattern if you decide to buy a stencil, and especially if you decide to use a stencil roller too!

Step 4: Apply your Stencil to your Wall!

This is the final step in your decorating journey! Each stencilling method has different ways of applying them, so if you follow the simple steps below for each method, you can definitely achieve that perfectly finished look!

Paper Cut-out Stencil:

With these types of stencils, it is always best to start in the middle of the wall so that you have an idea of how far your stencils will go on your wall.

Tape the stencil to the wall with decorating tape and make sure it is straight, either using someone else’s opinion, or by using a spirit level.

Make sure that you leave the stencil on until the paint has dried so that your stencil comes away clean and perfectly formed, rather than splashing or smudging.

Store-bought Stencil:

Just like the paper cut-out above, follow these guidelines for the store-bought stencil.

This might be easier to reprint than paper cut-out stencil as detailed above. These stencils are typically made out of plastic, or some sort of sprayed paper which can be reused.

This means that it will be easier to repeat the stencil for larger surfaces as you will be able to buy multiple versions of these stencils which are exactly the same, which means that you will not have to wait for each pattern to dry before painting another one.

Wallpaper Pattern Stamp:

This one is much easier to use than the other two above as it is used very similar to a roller. However, it is essential that you do not overload the pattern roller as this can smudge and ruin the pattern overall.

I would recommend using a paint brush to load your pattern roller so that you can have a smooth and balanced layer of paint on your pattern roller.

How could I paint a full feature wall in a metallic paint?

So, if you are painting a feature wall, there are a few steps which you must complete in order to get the best out of your metallic paint!

If you have previously sanded and primed your wall, you must prepare for painting your feature wall by painting it with a similar undercoat colour in order for your feature wall metallic paint to be as bold and vibrant as it possibly can be.

By completing this step, you will not only use less metallic paint than if you don’t complete this step, but it will also be more vibrant and bold colour than if you are painting your metallic paint over a white wall or even a wall which has multiple colours already on it.
