How will I style neutral colours in my home?
Although neutrals can be a boring, often ignored style choice, knowing how to style neutrals is half the battle!
Although neutrals can be a boring, often ignored style choice, knowing how to style neutrals is half the battle!
However, loving a neutral colour scheme doesn’t have to be
boring, if you know how to style it in the correct way!
With a bit of consideration, a neutral colour scheme can be refined, polished and very on trend too. This is because, sometimes when it comes to picking a colour scheme, less is more!
Allowing
other pieces in the room to be accentuated by the wall colour can make for a
fantastically decorated room which is not only sophisticated and beautiful, but
also minimal and easily cleaned too!

Why are neutrals such a great colour to
decorate my home with?
Neutrals are perfect for using as a backdrop to showcase and accentuate statement pieces in the room - or even allow a feature wall to show its individual beauty!
Neutrals are perfect for using as a backdrop to showcase and accentuate statement pieces in the room - or even allow a feature wall to show its individual beauty!
This can be in the form of furniture, a room accessory, a
framed picture, a mirror, or any other statement piece of your choosing!
Even
feature walls can be a neutral colour too as they can add subtle beauty to the
room!
If paired with another equally subtle colour, you can achieve a
beautifully elegant room, whilst also adding an extra little bit if pizzazz to
your room!
Beiges,
greys, greiges and creams can all be perfect backgrounds to show off more
vibrant furniture that you want to attract attention to in your home.
Perhaps
you wish to pair a white paint with a brightly coloured blue sofa, or a red,
green, purple, pink or any other coloured sofa- you will be able to pair almost
any feature colour with this beautifully versatile colour scheme.
When
working with a neutral palette it is essential to have an idea of the shade
pairings you will be making and any accent colours or statement pieces you will
want to use depending on the undertones of the neutral colour which you have
chosen.
For
example, if you are using a warm neutral colour, a blue might not work with it
as well as a red shade.
These
pairings will help you decide whether your neutrals should be cool or warm, be
grey or beige (or anywhere in between) or even if they have undertones of another
colour such as blue, green or purple.
If
you need any help with any colour pairings, you can DM us on Instagram, Facebook,
Twitter or even email us or Live Chat us too!

1.) Add patterns and texture to the room: This
can take a room from a flat, often boring, space into a more exciting and
inviting area. By adding patterns and texture to the neutral colour scheme in
your room, you will be able to add that extra bit of visual excitement into the
room.
This can be done by choosing textured of even
glittering wallpaper as either a neutral feature wall, or a full room of
wallpaper too!
Textures like velvet, wool or woven material work very well and
these can be on room accessories such as cushions, curtains and even rugs too.
2.) Use multiple coordinating tones: By
using multiple coordinating tones will create depth in a room and enable you to
use the same neutral colour schemes throughout without appearing boring and
repetitive.
Metallics such as; gold, brass, copper and rose
gold really pop and really make a room stand out when paired with a neutral
colour scheme.

3.) Coordinate your Woodwork with your Colour scheme: If you
wish to have a perfectly neutral colour scheme, you must first consider any
woodwork or wood furniture before deciding on a scheme.
Classic schemes typically have white woodwork,
warmer schemes including gold accents work well with darker woodwork, and for a
contemporary look woodwork can be painted darker or lighter to match any accent
colours.
4.) Pair Neutral tones with a Bright Feature Wall: Picking
wallpaper for a feature wall first, then picking a neutral scheme that pairs
well with this is always a good idea.
A great way to make your neutral shades stand out
is to pick shades with undertones that make them slightly different to the
feature wall.
For example, Farrow & Ball’s ‘Peignoir’ is a
great neutral grey shade with soft pink undertones, and Farrow & Ball’s
‘Dimpse’ with subtle blue undertones which would work well with a feature wall
which looks different to these chosen colours.

5.) Choosing unique Neutral Colours: Neutrals
don’t have to be light! You can pair some light neutral colours with darker
neutrals like charcoal grey, browns, deep golds, navy and black. These darker
neutrals will give the room warmth while sticking to your neutral scheme.
You can still express your creative side with a
neutral colour scheme. Try adding pops of colour, hanging colourful art or
opting for brighter furniture fabrics to make your room both exciting as well
as relaxed too!
These
are just a few of our tips on creating a perfect neutral colour scheme in your
home, and how you can make your scheme stand out from the rest and have a
little bit of individuality!
Neutral
colour schemes are incredibly popular and a lot of the questions we are asked daily
centre around matching well-known neutral colours to feature walls or to
current furniture.

How do I style a grey colour scheme in
my home without it looking too cold?
Use Grey Colours with Warmer Undertones
You
must firstly decide on the correct grey colour for your home! By choosing a
warm, yet not incredibly bold, grey colour, you can create a very cosy living
space in which you will always feel warm and comfortable.
Many
light grey colours have either a touch of yellow in them, or a touch of red
which gives the undertones of these light grey colours either a brownish or a
pinkish tinge to them.
This
means that you will be able to easily pair these shades with warmer tones.
For
example, pairing the yellow undertone grey with yellow cushions or a yellow
sofa throw can easily lighten and brighten your room, highlighting the subtle
warm tones in the grey colour scheme that you have chosen.

Bring in Nature into the Room
One
of the best ways to ensure that your room with the grey colour scheme does not
become a cold and icy space, is to introduce a little bit of nature into the
space to liven it up a little bit.
By
adding either living, or even plastic, plants into your living space, you can
create a fresh as well as a soothing colour palette into the grey room.
If you choose
plants with a subtle pastel green colour- one which will have a similar tone of
green to the grey you have chosen- such as succulents, is a great way of
sprucing up the space.
If
you’re anything like me and find it difficult to keep plants alive for any period,
a beautifully constructed plastic plant could be a great choice for you!
You
can even paint them with acrylic paint, if you want them to be a slightly
different shade, or if you wish for them to be a little bit more realistic too!

Choose a Theme for your Neutral Room
The
best way to style neutrals without using accent colours, or other colours which
you perhaps would prefer to remain neutral is to choose a theme for your room.
This
can also extend to other colour schemes too as ones of the best ways to create
a consistently beautiful room scheme is by choosing what you would like the
overall space to encompass.
For
example, if you are going for a woodland theme, you could choose a neutral
wallpaper like the one above, paired with a neutral colour paint for the other
walls as well as individual woodland-themed pieces such as a lamp, ornaments or
even cushions too.
This
will allow the room to completely work as one piece, rather than looking like a
collection of many different pieces all put together.
The very best way for you to be able to
choose a theme for your room is by creating a mood board for you to gauge if
you like that theme and if it would work with a neutral colour scheme too.
If you would like some more information
regarding how to make mood boards, you can check out our Other Blog Posts named
‘Designing a Mood Board’, ‘Winter Wonderland MoodBoards: Blue’ and ‘Winter Wonderland MoodBoards: Grey’.

Create a Simple
Harmonious Neutral Theme
If you prefer a simple and minimal look to your
home, creating a neutral, harmonious theme might be the best way to go for you.
Again, much like detailed above, the best way to
ensure that your neutrals will all work together is by creating a mood board of
the colours.
You can use sample pots, scraps of wallpaper and even pictures of
many different neutral tones too.
We also do a #fabfour colour matches on our social
media, which you can ask about.
However, if you wish, you can also DM us as
detailed above for more helpful guides and hints about which neutral colours
will work best with the colour scheme of the room.
