How do I fix water damaged walls?

If your walls are stained from previous water damage and painting over them simply won’t cut it - then a primer is the answer to all your problems.

The primer that you choose will create a seal between the water damaged wall and your new paint which means that the stains from the water damage will not penetrate through to your clean and fresh new paint.

The primer layer will also work to block in any moisture or discolouration created form the water damage as well as creating a wall that is both smooth and completely dry ready for a topcoat of paint.

What you will need:

Follow the step-by-step guide below in order to fix your water damaged walls quickly and effectively:

Decorating Centre Online- Sugar Soap Ready to Use 500mls £1.99

1.) Prepare the surface by cleaning with sugar soap. You must ensure that you clean away any mould or other organic growth which has occurred as a result of the water damage away from the wall. After this, ensure that the area which you have cleaned with sugar soap is completely dry.
2.) Fill in any cracks and/or any other small- or even larger- surface defects with a suitable filler, such as the Toupret FineSurface Filler £7.60. You must ensure that the filler which you decide to use is completely dry before you move into the next step below.
3.) Sand the area if there are areas of old paint/flaking paint/ loose plaster. This can be done by wrapping fine sandpaper around a wooden block, or other similar solid block and lightly rubbing it over the surface which your are intending to paint.
4.) If there is any dust from the sanding step detailed above, or even other common household dirt on your walls, you must make sure that you remove dust and the other loose material using a stiff bristled brush. If this step is not taken, the household dirt will get into your new layer of paint and will either show through with a texture, or even change the consistency of the paint applied. It is therefore essential that all dirt and/or dust is removed from your walls. Once the wall is both clean and completely dry, move onto next step.
5.) Apply Zinsser B-I-N primer to the wall using a paint brush in random strokes. We recommend that you use a synthetic bristle brush that will hold a good amount of the primer in the bristles for easy application- in accordance to the manufacturer’s instructions- and allow a minimum of two hours drying time. This step may need a second coat after the drying time is complete.
6.) Once the Zinsser primer has completely dried, the surface will be stain and odour free.
7.)  Apply your top coat of paint. If you need more information regarding this step, please check out our Other Blog post ‘How to Paint walls’.

How do I fix mould damaged walls?

Mould growing over paint or wallpaper is a very common problem in homes and is often caused by high humidity, condensation and water leaks amongst many other things too.

Mould occurs when moisture in the wall penetrates the paint and/or wallpaper causing mould and damp spots to crop up. Not only does this have a distinctive ‘mould’ small to it, but it can also damage the wallpaper and even the wall if left for a significant amount of time.

This means that, because mould is such a common issue, a lot of people end up having to re-paint their walls every couple of months to cover up the problem, which is not only time-consuming, but expensive too!

However, doing this allows the problem to keep occurring as the moisture continues to penetrate the new layers of paint or wallpaper and so you will only be covering up the problem, rather than fixing it for good.

Using Zinsser B-I-N will not only allow you to cover the problem in an efficient two steps, but also it will help to stop the problem all together as a result of its anti-fungicidal properties.

Zinsser’s B-I-N Primer also creates a coating that can be used to paint over and kill all existing mould, mildew, moss and odour causing bacteria.

  1. Prepare the mould damaged walls by removing damaged wallpaper- if you have any- by following the steps in out Other blog Post ‘How to Strip Wallpaper’.
  2. After the step above has been taken- if you must do it- ensure that you completely clean the wall with sugar soap. By completing this step, you will have to ensure that you remove all mould or other organic growth, dust and any loose bits of plaster from the wall.
  3. Next, ensure that you fill any cracks or small surface defects with a suitable filler such as Toupret Fine Surface Filler.
  4. Make sure that the wall is nice and smooth after repairing any damage by rubbing it down with a fine grade abrasive paper to ensure the wall is smooth. You must allow the wall to completely dry out before moving onto the next step below.
  5. Apply Zinsser B-I-N primer to the wall using a paint brush once the wall is completely dry. Much like in the water damage guide above, we would recommend using a synthetic bristle brush that will hold a good amount of the primer in the bristles for easy application (in accordance to the manufacturer’s instructions) and allow a minimum of two hours drying time.
  6. Once the Zinsser primer has completely dried, this should act as a breathable barrier between the wall and the paint and prevent moisture from breaking through the primer which is what usually causes mould damage. This primer also has anti-fungicidal properties which helps prevent mould causing bacteria as an extra barrier against mould growth.
  7. Next, paint over the primer with at least two coats of Perma-White. This is an anti-mould paint that will resist cracking, peeling and blistering for up to 7 years. It is suitable for areas of persistent high humidity, frequent temperature changes and poor air circulation such as bathrooms or even kitchens too. It is a scrubbable paint and perfect for high traffic areas such as bathrooms and laundry rooms too.
  8. Leave to dry for the appropriate time.

How do I fix the flaking paint on my walls?
Flaking paint is often caused by moisture beneath the paint, or if paint has been applied to a poorly prepared surface. This means that preparation is the key to creating a perfectly smooth wall which is free from flaking and other imperfect textures.

This can also be the case for wood surfaces if moisture penetrates the wood and a primer has not been used.

The best way to rectify flaking paint on your walls is to sand down the surface as much as possible and apply Zinsser Peel Stop which is a flexible sealer that creates a breathable membrane and a sound surface for new paint.

This tough acrylic film stays flexible and helps prevent peeling by letting moisture escape.

Follow the step-by-step guide below in order to remove your flaking paint from your walls and to ensure that your new paint won’t flake again:

  1. To prepare the surface for the application of the Zinsser Peel Stop using a sugar soap to remove any dust, dirt grime or wallpaper adhesive still left on the walls and ensure they are completely dry.
  2. Scrape or sand the surface to remove any flaking paint or loose plaster. Ensure that any of the dust or dirt from this step is completely removed before moving onto step 3.
  3.  Fill any cracks or small surface defects with a suitable filler such as Toupret Fine Surface Filler and rub down with a fine grade abrasive paper to ensure the wall is smooth. Allow the wall to try out completely before applying any primer.
  4. Spot prime areas with Zinsser’s Peel Stop where any paint has been scraped or sanded off. However, excessively porous surfaces may require a second coat- always wait the appropriate time before applying the second coat.
  5. Shake or stir before using and apply using a synthetic bristle brush, roller or an airless sprayer. Back brush or roll to work the Peel Stop Primer into cracks and edges of old paint. If applied correctly it should have a slight sheen when dried. Apply another coat if dull spots appear rather than a sheen.
  6. Allow to completely dry then for the best results use a coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye or Zinsser Cover Stain primer before painting. Using a primer before painting allows you to get the best durability and coverage. The primer builds up a protective breathable film underneath the paint which eliminates moisture, odours and prevents mould.
  7. Apply your top coat of paint- we would recommend always using two coats of this paint for the best-looking finish.
