Choose Your Wallpaper
Although this may seem like an easy step, choosing your wallpaper
can be more difficult than you think!
Your colour scheme, patterns and other aspects of your space can
make it sometimes difficult to find the best wallpaper for you, but with our
handy wallpaper questionnaire you can narrow down the wallpaper you like the
most!
We also stock large samples of wallpaper too- the first two are
free and then they’re 75p per sample after that. Make sure you put your samples
up on all the walls that you’re going to hang your wallpaper on to see what it
will look like in different lights.
One of the best ways to determine if your wallpaper is the right
one for you is to live with your wallpaper a while. Leave it hung up in the
space you want it and see how you like it after a week if you are still loving
it, order your rolls and start wallpapering!

Ask Yourself Some Questions
Before you even begin wallpapering, you need to ensure that your
walls are prepped for hanging your wallpaper.
Below is a list of questions you should ask yourself before you
begin hanging your wallpaper:
Have you removed your previous wallpaper?
- Wallpapering over previous wallpaper is not
the best idea. This can create a bobbled and textured finish to your wallpaper
(not ideal!). The best way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to remove all
previous wallpaper using the proper methods.
- Check your previous wallpaper if it's wet
removable, peelable or strippable. You can always have a look at our blog post
on how to remove wallpaper to find out more.
How much wallpaper will I need?
- An age-old question! Finding the right amount
of wallpaper for your space is very difficult to do. On average, patterned
wallpaper has 3 drops per roll and plain wallpaper has 4 drops per roll.
However, this can be very different depending on the pattern match of the
wallpaper as well as the height of your wall too.
- Remember, leave at least 10% extra for wastage!
- Instead of guessing, use our Wallpaper Calculator
(this is just below the ‘Add To Cart’ button on each wallpaper page) to find
out how much you’ll need for your space. Make sure to measure accurately
though!
- You can always return your unopened rolls of
wallpaper to us within 28 days of purchase (see our Delivery & Returns).
Have I used lining paper?
- Sometimes, using lining paper is a brilliant
way to not only create a smooth surface to hang your wallpaper on, but it also prevents
wallpaper shrinkage. This is when new wallpaper shrinks slightly on your wall,
leading to gaps between the lengths of paper.

Some Things to Consider before Wallpapering
-
Always keep adhesives, chemicals, scissors and
other wallpapering tools out of reach of children.
-
Have good ventilation throughout the entire
wallpapering process. Not only will this help the drying process of the
wallpaper, but some adhesives can have quite a strong scent.
-
Have a cuppa ready (and maybe even a bikkie, treat
yourself!)

Time to Hang your Wallpaper!
Step 1: Prep Your Walls
All of the walls you’re going to wallpaper must be smooth, clean,
dry and healthy before you start wallpapering.
Below is a short list of some of the problems you may encounter
before wallpapering and how to fix them:
-
My walls have holes in them!
Use a delicate filler such as Red devil One Time Filler and fill
in the holes using a filling knife. Make sure to sand the filled areas so that
they are smooth once the filler is completely dry.
-
My walls have silk/gloss paint on them
Using a universal primer like our Zinsser’s Gardz is a great way
of adding that extra layer of friction to your wall to ensure that your
wallpaper will stay on your walls.
-
I’m wallpapering over plaster
Use a sizing solution! This is essentially a watered-down
wallpaper past on your wall do that your plaster absorbs the water from the
paste before you hang your wallpaper.
-
My walls are dirty/ still have wallpaper
adhesive residue on
Clean them with sugar soap! Use a sponge and clean down your
walls, but make sure that you rinse the sugar soap off your walls before you
begin to paint them.

Step 2: Prepare your Wallpaper Paste
This will be either ready-mixed wallpaper paste or dry wallpaper
paste which will need to be mixed.
Choose the right wallpaper paste for your paper this will be
stated on the roll of wallpaper, but if you’re unsure, just DM, email, telephone
or live chat with us for advice.
Refer to manufacturer’s instructions when mixing your wallpaper
paste.

Step 3: Paste the Wall OR Paste the Wallpaper
Check your roll and follow the instructions below:
Paste-the-paper Wallpaper
For the
traditional paste-the-paper wallpaper, you will need a wallpaper table in order
to paint the paste on each length of wallpaper for your wall.
Check out the
step-by-step guide below for handy tips and help hanging paste-the-paper wallpaper:
- Cut your wallpaper into
lengths that will fit your walls
Leave a little
extra on both ends.
- Place the Wallpaper Strips
Face Down on a Pasting Table
At least that
step is easy!
- Apply your adhesive to the
back of the Wallpaper
Using a pasting brush apply
the paste all over your wallpaper. Ensure that every part of the wallpaper
has some adhesive on it in order to prevent corners from falling off your wall.
- Paste from the inside outside
This is to prevent the collection of paste on the patterned
surface which will be visible when it is pasted onto the wall. If this does
happen, sponge it off straightaway.
- Allow the Adhesive to soak
This ‘soak time’ is the period it takes for the wallpaper to
expand out to its maximum width once the adhesive has been applied. This
will be approximately 8-12 minutes- although it is sometimes specifically
written on the label too.
- Fold the ends towards the
middle
Folding your wallpaper into a
concertina like this can prevent your adhesive from drying out whilst allowing
it to sit for the appropriate time too.
Paste-the-Wall Wallpaper
For paste-the-wall
wallpaper, the simplest way to hang this wallpaper is by simply pasting the
wall as the name suggests.
Rather than using
a pasting table- as will be detailed below- the adhesive is simply painted onto
the wall rather than the wallpaper.
If you want, you
can make this step quicker by pasting the wall with the adhesive using a paint
roller rather than a paintbrush.
This is because it
will not only be a quicker way of completing this step, but it will also ensure
a smoother fixture to the wall too.
- Paste the Wall
Using a pasting brush or
roller, apply the wallpaper paste to the wall in a thin, even layer.
- Put the Wallpaper on the Wall
Starting from the top corner
of the wall, simply unroll the wallpaper from the top to the bottom of the
wall, smoothing down the walls with a wallpaper brush as you go.
- Leave Extra Wallpaper
Leave extra wallpaper (about
2-3cms) at the top and bottom of the wallpaper length to allow for a straight cut
later.
- Check the Alignment
Double-check the alignment of the strips using a Plumb Bob & Line. If the
strip is not positioned in the way you’d like it, slowly and delicately take
the length off your wall and reposition it using the steps above.
- Trim Excess Wallpaper
Trim any
excess wallpaper off the top and bottom of your wallpaper. Use the Coral Paper Whiz
3-in-1 Wallpaper Tool to push the wallpaper close to your wall and use it as a
guide to cut the wallpaper in a straight line using a snap-off knife.
- Smooth out Wallpaper
If you find that there are any
blebs or bobbles in your wallpaper, you can use a drywall knife to smooth it
out. However, you must be gentle when completing this step, in order to prevent
your wallpaper from ripping or tearing slightly.

Step 4: Hang your other
Strips of Wallpaper
Check your
wallpaper roll for the pattern repeat- or lack of pattern repeat- and follow
the steps above to hang the rest of your wallpaper on your wall.
Be aware of making
sure that the seams match up as best and close as you possibly can. The seams
can be flattened using a seam roller for the smoothest and best finish.
Step 5: Wallpapering
Around Sockets
This may seem like
a daunting- and impossible- task. But never fear! Grab your cuppa, take a break
and follow the steps below for a professional-looking wallpaper socket.
-
Place your wallpaper strip
over the socket.
-
Draw over the area where the
socket is placed.
-
Cut a X in the area (make sure
to cut just under the size of the socket).
-
Lift up your wallpaper strip.
-
Unscrew the socket.
-
Cut the area out (again, make
sure that it’s just smaller than the socket).
-
Push the wallpaper behind your
socket.
-
Screw it back on.
-
Voila!
It’s easier than
it seams (see what I did there?!)
Step 6:
Wallpapering around Doors and Windows
Doing this is very
much like the step above.
-
Simply cover the door or
window with the wallpaper strip.
-
Mark the angle with your
finger.
-
Use scissors to cut the excess
wallpaper.
-
Leave extra centimetres on
your paper.
-
Smooth out the wallpaper.
-
Cut the excess with a snap-off
knife.
Step 7: Smooth
down your Wallpaper Strips
Ensure your wallpaper
strips are perfectly smooth and bobble-free. If they’re not and there are
bubbles and other imperfections in your wallpaper, you can use an Axus
Bubble-Out Wallpaper Syringe to get rid of the bubbles in your wallpaper.
