How do I prepare my
bathroom for decorating?
For every single paint job
that you undertake, you must ensure that the space is properly prepared before
you even begin painting the space!
The best way to ensure
that your bathroom surface have a long-lasting finish which looks as smooth and
perfect as it possibly can look is to ensure that firstly all cracks, breaks or
any other damages to the surface are fully fixed and dry before you begin the
painting process.
Many issues with bathrooms
are quite minor and can be fixed easily and quickly such as small holes or
dents in the walls.
These can be fixed using a
filler and left to dry and then spot primed with an appropriate primer such as
our Zinsser’s B-I-N primer which will prevent any stains from the filler form coming
through the paint surface and creating a patchy-looking paint job in the months
to come.
However, of there are any
bigger jobs which need completing in your bathroom space such as replacing
tiles, radiators or even full baths, you will have to ensure that these tasks
are fully completed before you begin painting.
It is very essential that
these are completed so that they will not compromise the overall look of the
decorating after you have painted.
After all, you won’t want
your perfect paint finish to have scuff marks or patches on where the bath has
been put in. It is much easier to cover these marks with paint then removing them
afterwards.
It is also essential that
all of these things are fully dried before you begin painting- especially fillers
where you will be painting on top of- in order to ensure that your paint will
not be compromised by the filler underneath and potentially flaker, peel or
even stain from whatever you have used underneath your paint job to fill in
cracks.
How can I prevent paint
splatters from ruining the rest of my bathroom?
This has a quick answer
but is very slow to complete: cover all your fittings to prevent paint
splatters.
Now, for some types of
bathroom, this process can be very easy, most of your fittings might already be
covered, or discreetly tucked away in areas which make it very easy for you to
cover them all.
However, for other types
of bathroom, your fittings might be more on show and very visible, which means
that you will have to spend some time and cover all of them up before painting
or priming or even sanding.
The best way to do this is
to use a polyurethane dust sheet and cut it up into sized which would be able
to cover your fittings and then tape the dust sheet onto the fittings using our
Deltec decorator’s low tac tape- remember if you need to get the adhesive off
you fittings, you can always use Zinsser’s Degreaser & Cleaner to
effectively remove the adhesive.

If you are keeping your
bath fitted into your bathroom space, you will have to make sure that this is
fully covered too. You can either use a fabric dust sheet for this task, or you
can use another polyurethane dust sheet in a similar fashion as detailed above and
tape it to the areas which you don’t wish to paint.
This will not only protect
your bath- and any other fittings which cannot be removed such as your sink and
your toilet- from being covered in paint and paint splatters, but it will also be
very easy to remove afterwards too!
Remember, you may need a
dust sheet spare to protect your flooring if you’re not replacing it too!

I’ve prepared my bathroom for painting, but I’ve noticed some mould spots on my walls, can I just paint over them?
If you have spotted mould
in your bathroom- specifically on your walls- you will have to firstly try and
remove as much of this as you possibly can before you paint over it.
This is because of you
paint straight over active mould fungal growth, it will be more likely to penetrate
through your paint layer and grow on top of your paint again.
However, if you remove it
before priming your walls and then painting with a specifically designed
bathroom paint, it will be much less likely to come back as a result of the
properties of the paint inhibiting mould growth. There is more detail about
which paint you should use for bathrooms below.
There are many ways in
which you can remove the mould growth in your bathroom, however a simple
solution of a light detergent with warm water is just quite not strong enough.
This solution will remove
the overall look of mould- depending on the severity of the fungus growth-
however, it will not remove the actual spores from the surface of the walls,
for this, you will need a much more specific mould remover.
One of the best products
for this task is Zinsser’s Mould Killer & remover which can easily strip
the wall of any mould spores and prevent the penetration of the mould spores at
a later date too. Make sure that this spray is concentrated on areas of your
bathroom which frequently succumb to mould growth such as the top corners of
the bathroom space.

Acrylic Eggshell Colour
Match Paint: For your walls, you can
use an acrylic eggshell finish which has a slight sheen to it- however, less so
than satin paint- which is a scrubbable finish and moisture resistant too.
The paint finish is a
scrubbable finish and is quite durable too which means that it is perfect for
bathrooms which need to be cleaned and washed down in your bathroom.
This acrylic eggshell
paint is also able to be colour matched to over 16,000 colours which means that
you can have any of your favourite big brand colours in your bathroom too!

I need to
paint the woodwork in my bathroom, what should I use?
Much like painting
your bathroom walls, there are two ways which you can paint your woodwork in
your bathroom: with an acrylic eggshell colour match finish paint or our
Zinsser’s AllCoat Colour Match Paint.
If your
woodwork has been previously painted, you will have to sand back as much of the
previous paint as you possibly can before starting to use either of these paint
finishes. This will ensure that your paint will have the smoothest and
best-looking finish that it possibly can.
Acrylic
eggshell colour match paint: If you are deciding to use this acrylic eggshell colour
match paint, you will need to sand down your woodwork as much as you possibly
can and then prime with Zinsser’s B-I-N primer and then use two coats of our
acrylic eggshell colour match paint on top.
Zinnsser’s AllCoat Colour
Match Paint: using this paint, you will
again have to sand down as much of the previous paint as possible to ensure a
smooth finish and then just directly paint the AllCoat paint on top of the
woodwork. This paint is available in three different finishes: matt, satin and
gloss and all are equally as scrubbable and cleanable.
This paint finish is also
a self-primer- just like the perma-white paint- and therefore can be painted directly
on top of the woodwork and adhere to its surface very well.

I want to wallpaper my
bathroom, which wallpaper should I use?
If you’re wanting to wallpaper
your bathroom, there are only a few different technical points which you should
keep your eyes peeled for:
·
Go for a wallpaper which
is scrubbable- this will mean that you will be able to wipe down your wallpaper
with a wet cloth and it will be able to resist a lot of moisture form your
bathroom too.
·
Make sure it is made form
a vinyl- if your wallpaper is scrubbable, it is more likely to be made form a
vinyl and therefore is much more durable than many other types of wallpaper.
·
Use a ready mixed
wallpaper adhesive- although it may be a little bit more expensive than dry
wallpaper adhesive, ready-mix wallpaper adhesive is much stronger than the
other types and ifs perfect for not only hanging heavier wallpapers- such as
the vinyl and scrubbable types- but will also be able to adhere to the surface
of the wall much easier too.
However, if your bathroom
is particularly prone to mould growth or damp, it is best to go with our perma-white
colour match paint as it will be less likely to develop mould and is also much
more cleanable than even a scrubbable wallpaper.
