Below is an easy step-by-step guide on how to paint your garage doors on a budget!

1. Start by Sanding and/or brushing off any large pieces of rust and/or dirt on your garage door

As they are usually in a very prominent position on the outside of your home, garage doors can get very dirty and mucky quickly.

You will have to remove all the dirt and grime that you possibly can off the garage door before you begin painting and priming the door.

By cleaning your garage door, it will also give an indication of what the current state of your garage door is.

If there are any repairs which need completing, you will have to do this and allow all the substances you used to fix the garage door to fully dry before priming and painting!

If your garage door is rusty in any areas, make sure that you sand down the rusty spots to make sure that your garage door has the best and smoothest finish for your final topcoat to look the best that it possibly can look.

2. Clean the garage door thoroughly with a degreaser cleaning spray

Although you may have just cleaned your garage door from a thick amount of muck and dirt, you must ensure that you clean it thoroughly afterwards with a degreaser spray such as our Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner.

This spray ensures that any grease- from fingertips, the elements or anything else- is completely broken down and able to be easily wiped off the garage door.

Although this may seem like overkill, it is an essential step in ensuring that your primer and paint layer stick to the garage door.

Without using a degreaser, the primer or paint layer might find it difficult to adhere to the surface of the garage door and the grease could even interfere with the final finish of the paint too.

Spray the garage door lightly with your degreaser and then use a clean cloth to wipe down any grease and dirt from your door.

You should do this until the sponge or cloth is no longer sticking to the surface of the garage door and can lightly glide over the surface instead.

3. Wash off the degreaser with clean water

To ensure that your degreaser doesn’t interfere with the final finish of your paint, you must ensure that your degreaser is completely washed off your garage door and that it is left to dry perfectly before applying your primer layer on your garage door.

If this step is not taken, your paint could potentially bubble, crack or even peel off the surface of the garage door.

Using a new cloth or sponge and a bucket of clean water, wash off the degreaser until your garage door is completely clean of all dirt and muck as well as any degreaser you have previously used.

Leave your garage door to dry- this will only take 20 minutes or so, depending on the temperature outside- and make sure that it is not wet or even damp before you move onto the next step.

4. Depending on the surface of your garage door, prime your garage door before painting

If your garage door has a particularly smooth surface, you may have to prime your door before painting it- although you can skip this step if your garage door does not have as much of a smooth surface.

The best primer to use would be our Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Interior & Exterior Primer-Sealer Stain Killer.

Paint this primer on with a brush in the smoothest way which you possibly can, making sure that all corners and grooves have a layer of primer in too.

This primer layer is suitable for both interior and exterior use and creates a friction layer for your garage door which allows for the paint layers to fully adhere to the surface.

It can cover graffiti, grease stans and even block against rust too!
Leave this primer to dry for approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the temperature and the weather outside.

5. Paint your first coat of Colour Match Zinsser’s AllCoat
After you have let your primer layer to dry for the appropriate time, you can then go ahead and paint on your first layer of our Colour Match Zinsser’s AllCoat- which can be matched into over 16,000 colours!

This particular paint is a self-primer paint and has a coverage of 12m2 per litre, so depending on the size of your garage, you may need between 1L and 2.5L (remember to calculate the amount of paint you will need for two coats for the best finish).

The best way to paint your garage door is in a similar way to your front door or your primer layer.

This means that you can cut into the edges and grooves with a paintbrush in order to fully cover the garage door and then use a small micro-roller to paint the larger sections of the garage door to give a perfectly smooth finish.

Make sure that you pay particular attention to any drips or dribbles which may occur on your garage door during painting.

This can be avoided by painting a thin amount of paint on the door multiple times rather than using one thicker layer to avoid multiple coats.

You must ensure that when you paint on your AllCoat that the temperature outside does not fluctuate too much and that the surface temperatures are between 10-32C and that humidity is less than 85% too.

Although this can be difficult to achieve- after all, we don’t always have a crystal ball to determine the weather!- just try to paint your garage doors on days which there won’t be a lot of temperature fluctuation if it can be helped!

6. Paint on your second coat Zinsser’s AllCoat

After you have painted your first layer of Zinnser’s AllCoat on your garage door, you have to wait the appropriate time- at least 2 hours, depending on the temperature of the outside- before you put on your second coat.

At least two coats of Zinsser’s AllCoat is the right amount for a perfectly smooth and vibrant finish.

For this product to fully cure, you must leave it to fully dry an d develop its adhesion and hardness in 7 days, although this product will be dry within 2 hours.

7. And you’re finished!

Enjoy your gorgeous-looking new revamped garage door!
