Why should I paint my
decking?
Painting your decking is a fantastic way to not only revive
your old decking but is also a great way of creating a colour scheme for your
outdoor spaces too!
However, painting your decking can also add to the strength
and durability of your decking too!
Not only can painting your decking protect the wood against
any splits and cracks, but it can also protect your decking against often
damaging UV rays as well as rain, wind and any other harsh outdoor conditions
too!
These outdoor weather conditions can often grey the wood
over time; however, a top layer of paint can create a sealant for your wood,
protecting it and making it’s a more durable surface than before.
When should I paint
my decking?
Although you may want to revive your decking at any time
during the year, you may have to wait for the optimum conditions before you
begin your painting journey.
Not only must you ensure that the paint on your decking is
painted onto dry wood- meaning that it must not have rained for at least a day
previous to starting the painting
journey- but you must also ensure that it will not start raining during the
drying process of the paint either.
If it rains during either of these processes, the paint on
your decking can become streaky and will not have the perfectly smooth finish
which you will want your paint to have.
This rain could even potentially lead to your paint becoming
chipped and cracked prematurely as it will be unable to fully dry properly as a
result of the rain- and even the temperature drop- removing this possibility.
This means that you must ensure that the wood which you are
painting must be dry and it must also be a sunny and dry day too in order to
achieve the best finish for your decking as you possibly can.
Which paint is the best to use for my decking?
For your decking, you can either use decking paint or
decking stain, depending on what type of aesthetic look you’re looking to
achieve for your decking.
Decking paint must be strong, durable, anti-slip and it must
also be perfectly matched for you colour scheme for your outdoor space.
Not only will painting and/or staining your decking make it
look gorgeous and part of the colour scheme of your outdoor space, but it will
also make your decking stringer and more durable against any of the elements.
Untreated wood decking can create rot and decay on the
boards and even potentially make it a hazardous space to walk over.

What are the steps that I will need to take to paint my
decking?
Although painting your decking may seem like a daunting and
time-consuming task, there are many ways in which you can help yourself paint
your decking in a quick and easy way.
One of the best ways to achieve a great finish on your decking

How should I prepare my decking for staining?
Clean your decking
Firstly, you must clean your decking before starting to
paint your decking in any way.
This can be done by removing any weathering effects before you
even begin painting. This can be either dust or dirt or leaves which have been
blown onto your decking, or even any chips, breakages and anything else too.
If you complete all these individual steps before you paint
your decking, you will have a perfectly solid and smooth base for painting your
decking which will ensure that it has a great finish when your painting or staining
is complete.

Remove mill scale from any new decking
You must definitely ensure that mill scale is removed from
any of your new decking so that your wood stain, oil or paint can penetrate the
wood pores of your decking effectively.
You can do this easily in a variety of different ways, such
as by using a wood cleaner, a pressure washer or even just a simple scrubbing
brush to remove any mill scale.
Clean away any chemical you have used to clean your
decking with
If you have used any previous chemicals to clean your
decking in the previous steps, you must ensure that you remove any of these
previous chemicals before you begin painting or staining your decking.
If you skip this step, the paint or staining which you use
could potentially mix with the cleaning chemicals and perhaps even react with
each other.
This could leave your final paint finish looking less smooth
and perfect as you could have if you choose to follow each of the steps above.

How should I paint my decking to achieve the best finish?
Once you decking is completely dry and you think that the
weather will hold up too, you will be ready to apply your first coat of
staining or paint to your decking.
Ensure that you always follow the grain of the wood-
especially when you are using wood stain as this will prevent the stain from
clogging up in the grains of the wood and looking uneven and patchy.
You can use a small brush to cut in and to paint the harder
to reach areas of your decking, or you can use a paint roller on a long roller
brush to apply your first coat.
Remember to start at one edge of the decking and move
towards the other. This will ensure that you do not ‘paint yourself in’ to the
decking and potentially leave a patch to dry.

This dry patch will be difficult to cover completely
without there being a seam between the dry paint and the new wet paint- even
after it’s dried this seam could possibly show up too.
If you are wanting your decking paint to last for a long
time, it is definitely recommended to paint at least two to three coats of your
decking paint before using your decking.
This is because multiple coats will
ensure that your decking paint will not chip away when you are walking over it.
However, you must ensure that each coat of your paint is
fully dried before you paint another coat on top of it in order to ensure that
your under layer does not ‘pull up’ from your decking as a result of it being
wet and/or semi-dry.
